Instagram Reel URLs and public posts

Instagram uses **shortcodes** in more than one path. `/reel/SHORTCODE/` is a Reel. `/p/SHORTCODE/` is a feed post (photo, carousel, or in-feed video). `/tv/` is the older long-video landing. Copying the wrong one is the usual support issue, which is why RootoverZero split the [Reels downloader](/tools/instagram-reels-downloader) from the [video post downloader](/tools/instagram-video-downloader).

How to copy a public Reel

In the app, open the Reel (not the profile grid), share, copy link. You want `instagram.com/reel/` plus a shortcode. A link that is only `instagram.com/username` is a profile.

On desktop, the address bar while the Reel player is open is the source of truth.

If Instagram prefixes `l.instagram.com`, let it resolve or copy again from the post.

Public means logged-out

Open the URL in a private window. If Meta asks you to log in, anonymous tools — including ours — see a wall. Close-friends Reels and private accounts fail for the same reason.

Carousels and Reels are not the same job

A `/p/` carousel is several assets. Public metadata often exposes one preview. A Reel is one clip with a Reel path. Do not expect a ZIP of every carousel slide from a downloader that only received one `og:image`.

For a square still you already have, crop without stretching: [1:1 for Instagram](/blog/crop-photo-to-1-1-for-instagram-without-stretching) and the [Image Cropper](/tools/image-cropper).

Stories

Story links expire and are usually not `/reel/` URLs. This cluster does not include a story saver.

FAQ

Can one shortcode be both /p/ and /reel/?

Instagram sometimes creates more than one surface for similar media. Copy the URL for the surface you mean.
